Japan launches talking humanoid robot into space

5 August 2013

Japan has launched the world's first talking humanoid robot "astronaut" toward the International Space Station.

Kirobo - derived from the Japanese words for "hope" and "robot" - was among five tons of supplies and machinery on a rocket launched Sunday from Tanegashima in southwestern Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said.

The childlike robot was designed to be a companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata and will communicate with another robot on Earth, according to developers. Wakata is expected to arrive at the space station in November.

Robot designer Tomotaka Takahashi, of the University of Tokyo, advertiser Dentsu and automaker Toyota Motor Corp. worked on the robot.

The challenge was making sure it could move and talk where there was no gravity.
Ahead of the launch, the 34-centimeter (13-inch) tall Kirobo told reporters, "one small step for me, a giant leap for robots."

Japan boasts the most sophisticated robotics in the world, but because of its "manga" culture, it tends to favor cute robots with human-like characteristics with emotional appeal, a use of technology that has at times drawn criticism for being not productive.

But Takahashi said sending a robot into space could help write a new chapter in the history of communication.

"I wish for this robot to function as a mediator between person and machine, or person and Internet and sometimes even between people," he said.

JAXA said the rocket launch was successful, and the separation of a cargo vehicle, carrying the robot to the space station, was confirmed about 15 minutes after liftoff.

Smart Namo, Narendra Modi branded Android phone

29 July 2013

Gujarat chief minister  Narendra Modi will soon get a smartphone dedicated to him. Smart Namo, an independent body formed by Modi fans, has announced it will soon launch a mobile phone by the same name. The upcoming Android phone is the group members' way of showing their dedication and respect to Modi, the official website for the device says.

According to the website, Namo is an acronym for Narendra Modi as well as Next-generation Android Mobile Odyssey. Modi is popularly referred to as NaMo on social networking websites. Apart from launching the standard version of the device, the group has already starting working on the "Shri Narendra Modi signature edition" handset.

The Smart Namo group includes Gujarati businessmen who have mobile businesses in China. Ammeet Desai, the spokesperson for Smart Namo told The Wall Street Journal that they got the idea for this phone from China itself, where several products like MP3 players and smartphones are branded with their leaders' name.

The group's members will design the phone over the next month and go to Modi for his approval, the report says. Desai said that the group will establish a production plant to manufacture the handsets in Gujarat.

While it does not give a time line for the launch of the device, the group says it will launch the smartphone "very soon." The report claims that Smart Namo phone will cost Rs 16,000 at launch and have videos as well as apps related to Modi. The group will be selling the phone at cost, thus making no profit from it. Cheaper versions of the device are also in the pipeline, including a feature phone that will cost Rs 1,000.

Coming to the specs of the phone, the Smart Namo website says that the phone will have a 5-inch screen, reinforced with Corning Gorilla Glass 2. It will run on a 1.5GHz quad-core Mediatek chipset that supports dual-sim functionality and have a 13MP camera on the back. The phone will be available in four variants, as per storage and RAM.

IRCTC books a record of 5.02 lakh e-tickets on March 1

3 March 2013

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) booked more than five lakh rail e-tickets on March 1, surpassing the earlier one-day sales record set in July last year.

The corporation booked 5.02 lakh e-tickets, crossing the earlier figure of 4.96 lakh e-tickets booked on July 7 last year, an IRCTC official said.

The record, he said, comes at a time when the IRCTC is facing criticism of its website failing to cope up with the peak hour rush for tatkal bookings and during festive season.

IRCTC had recently invested Rs 3.5 crore in enhancing the efficiency of the website and another Rs three crore in augmenting the software licenses and storage area network.

The system is now being upgraded with more powerful Hexa Core servers (with 64GB RAM) from the earlier Dual Core servers (with 8GB RAM), which is costing nearly Rs four crore, the official said.

"With the above investment/upgradation, we are hopeful to achieve around 40-45 per cent increase in the booking during the tatkal hours," he said.

At present, the e-ticketing site books around 48 per cent of the total reserved tickets on the Indian Railways network.

Railway minister Pawan Bansal, in his budget speech, had announced revamping the IRCTC site by increasing the booking rate to 7,200 tickets per minute from its present around 2,000 tickets.

He had declared that the site, expected to be ready by the year-end, would be able to handle 1.2 lakh users at any point of time as compared to its existing capacity of 40,000 users.

IRCTC has already started working on this augmentation, in which they are investing crores of rupees to install future generation hardware and software.

Whatsapp, which was founded in 2009, has 1,000 million daily active users globally and delivers about one billion messages per day.

Lenovo's upcoming five-inch 1080p phone to feature dual-SIM connectivity

17 November 2012

DNP Lenovo also working on a 1080p smartphone in the 5inch area
By now you should already know that HTC, Sharp and Oppo share a common theme: 1080p display on their five-inch phones. As it turns out, Lenovo also wants in on the VIP list. Spotted on Sina Weibo earlier this week (but have since been deleted) are the above three screenshots showing off Lenovo's customized Android UI in 1080p glory. As with many phones in China these days, the device in question supports dual-SIM connectivity -- the screenshots indicate that it's connected to China Telecom's CDMA2000 network and China Mobile's 2G network simultaneously.
Our own source wouldn't directly confirm that it's a five-inch display on this mysterious phone, but we were told that it'll be somewhere between 4.5 inches and 5.5 inches -- we'll take that as a yes, especially since the only 1080p mobile panels available right now are the five-inch, 440ppi ones from Sharp and JDI. Our source also said the phone's entered DVT (Design Verification Test) phase for some time, so it might not be long before we hear an official announcement in China. As always, stay tuned.

Twitter Adds Ability to Email Tweets From the Web

Twitter email
Facebook may have more users, but in the arena of social media no platform has become more important in communicating public messages than Twitter. Now the company has decided to expand its reach by adding the ability to email tweets from its website.

The company also provided a boost to its iPhone and Android apps, and enhanced its search results.
Many Twitter apps (including Twitter's own) already allow you to email a tweet to anyone not using the service, but this new option will be embedded directly into the Twitter.com website as a standard option. The feature will appear in a new "More" icon next to the current "Favorite" option (similar to the interface on the current Twitter mobile app), and will instantly open an email window.
When you email a tweet from your mobile device, the "From" address is typically your device's default email address (i.e. your own email address). But with this new feature, based on the currently available details, it appears that the emails will be sent directly from Twitter. It is as yet unclear as to whether or not an option to add your own email as the "Sender" will be available.
"You can email a Tweet to anyone, whether they use Twitter or not, right from your Twitter stream or from the details view of any Tweet," a Twitter engineer wrote in a blog post. "You can add your own comment, and we'll send an email with your comment and the Tweet together. Just like that."
Currently, Twitter boasts roughly 500 million users, an impressive number but still far behind Facebook's one billion users worldwide. This new email option could help Twitter significantly increase its user base.
On the mobile front, Twitter's update to its apps provides easier access to headlines and photos from shared articles, a "view all tweets" section that pulls in tweets that were shared by people in your network, and photo results in search.

Black Ops 2 Rakes in $500 Million in 24 Hours

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

The latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise, Black Ops 2, raked in a whopping $500 million in retail sales around the world in its first 24 hours of release.
"With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row," Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, said in a statement.
Activision said that millions of fans attended more than 16,000 midnight openings at retail stores worldwide to be among the first to get their hands on the game. In its first 24 hours, Black Ops 2 was a trending topic on Twitter in 23 cities worldwide. The game's launch trailer has tallied up more than 30 million YouTube views since its release on Oct. 29.
"Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts forHarry Potter and Star Wars, the two most successful movie franchises of all time," Kotick said. "Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013."
The strong early sales figures are not surprising. Back in May, Amazon revealed that the single-day pre-orders for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 were three times higher than the one-day pre-order total for the game's predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Perhaps the secret to its success is that Call of Duty isn't just a game, it's a brand, according to Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.
"Every November we do more than just the launch of a game, we kick off an annual, unofficial but worldwide phenomenon called the Call of Duty season," he said.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, penned by The Dark Knight scribe David Goyer, takes place in the year 2025 where a terrorist organization takes control of U.S. high-tech, unmanned war machines. Besides the futuristic weaponry and military craft that look like they were pulled from the set of a Terminator flick, there are also shootouts that occur on horseback, as well as a simmering Cold War between the United States and China over rare Earth materials.
Black Ops 2 is not the only video game franchise making big bucks this month. The recently released Halo 4 earned $220 million in its first 24 hours.

Users can now post Videos in Wikipedia

13 November 2012

Wikipedia, the world's largest online encyclopedia, has launched a new project enabling registered users to post videos, according to the portal's press service.
"A new video player has been enabled onWikipedia and its sister sites, and it comes with the promise of bringing free educational videos to more people, on more devices, in more languages," Wikimedia Foundation said Friday.
Wikipedia articles have remained largely text-based until now.
The video upload project, carried out in cooperation with open-source video start-up Kaltura and the Google search engine, was launched in 2008. But it was delayed due to numerous technical problems.
The new HTML5 player is a result of a combined effort between Wikipedia, Google and Kaltura.
Wikipedia, which sees 25 million unique daily visitors to its English section alone, currently hosts only about 15,000 videos.
The videos were added either via the older Ogg Theora player that has been in use since 2007 or as part of testing the new player, based on HTML5.

The test layout keeps the boxes that highlight friends and activities on the right side.
According to Inside Facebook, the firm is currently rolling out the test to a small number of users.
"This is a new design Facebook is testing with a small percentage of people to make navigating timeline even easier," CNET quoted a Facebook spokeswoman, as saying.
The right hand column keeps the existing boxes such as "Recent Activity," "Friends," "Photos" and "Likes," as well as any app activity displayed by users.
