UNSATISFIED employee

16 March 2013

UNSATISFIED employee, who is it?
Before 80s in India, when literacy rates and amount of exposure to western world were significantly lower, employees in general were very happy with their work life. They seem to work for longer in the same company without having an irk towards work. But today, when i interact about work life with my current & former colleagues, friends or any other person working in a multi-national company, they seem like either they are stressed out, morally worn out or we can just say “Unsatisfied!”
When enquired, employees just responded - "It's lower pay". But is this the only reason which drives you to your work, everyday?
In retrospect, if we look deep into this very common yet complicated issue, the prime reasons of this issue as outsourcing, growing social pressure, unclear career trajectory, lack of authority and dis-engagement.
As India started to provide a high value location to a lot of big MNCs, we only saw the creamy outcome of country's increasing importance in the world. But today, the precedent history have a lasting effect on all our jobs. Most of us could seldom disagree that majority of our jobs are primarily "outsourced" from western countries. As an outsourced job holder, you always have the benefit of gaining a global exposure and present your work to a global audience but there is a major challenge which overrides all these advantages, which either gets ignored or felt silly about - the inevitable challenge of time zone difference with your peer!
This leads to hampered knowledge transfer, failure to effectively communicate, descending confidence and trust among peers. All these factors stand in your way to make significant career progress and gain authority. This tend to generate a sense of negligence by you towards work, towards peers and growing self proclaimed esteem.
Although an employee is very confident about his/her position, both financially and socially; each one of us do face increasing sense of pressure mainly due to our very usual behavior of comparison. Though you disagree, we unknowingly evaluate once and again, our self career growth with that of people you come across in life. Other challenge you face is - visible stagnation in the earning power as compared to increased expenses.
These reasons may be the very obvious but we can avoid this by regular introspection and open communication to gain some clarity on individual’s career path. This degree of transparency on our career growth could be achieved only through clear communication and mentorship.
Again, it cannot be achieved overnight because of the same challenges we come across as an outsourced employee. Though we can’t root out this bottleneck, we can reduce the impact by maintaining a constant interaction through ongoing email chains and scheduled regular catch ups with your peers. Also, engage your mind by regular participation in various social activities and effective social networking.
We can never be too dissatisfied nor should we be too satisfied on any one thing. Try and focus on today’s work and give your best shot to maintain a healthy and justified state of satisfaction.
"To be too dissatisfied with ourselves is a weakness. To be too satisfied with ourselves is a stupidity."

Cool Facebook Status Tips and Tricks

7 March 2013

HOW TO: Hide Status Updates From Certain People

Using Facebook's general privacy settings (find these by hitting "account" on the top right of a Facebook page) you can select whether everyone, just friends or friends of friends can see your status updates. However, there is a way to narrow those options down even further.
You can select specific friend lists to see your status (relevant for work, special interest groups, etc.) or even individual people by name, which is useful for anyone organizing a surprise party.
To take advantage of these options, click the padlock icon just below your "what's on your mind" box on your wall and a drop down menu should appear. Selecting "customize" will bring up more options such as "make this visible to" and "hide from" with the option to make your selection a default.

 HOW TO: Pre-Schedule Status Updates

While SocialOomph, Sendible and HootSuite offer the same kind of service, the simplest way to schedule Facebook status updates is by using the easy, free Later Bro service.
Just sign in with Facebook Connect, select your time zone, type in what it is you'd like to say, set the calendar and clock to when you'd like to say it, and presto!

HOW TO: Play a Trick On Your Friends in Your Status Update

We have a funny one to end on -- a way to play an amusing trick on your Facebook buddies.
This clever link "http://facebook.com/profile.php?=73322363" looks like it could be a URL for anyone's Facebook profile, actually takes anyone logged into Facebook to their own profile page.
If you try it out, be sure to remove the link preview that Facebook auto-ads. Have fun, and don't be too mean...

HOW TO: See Your Status Update Stats

Have you ever wondered how many times you have updated your status on Facebook? The Facebook app Status Statistics, can tell you this and more.
The app analyzes your updates and gives you a tidy list of how many you've written, the average word count and how many times a day you post. In addition, it generates a graph that shows you what time of day or what days of the week you normally update.
Old statuses are also searchable via the app, so you can find that witty retort you made back in November 2009 without having to scroll back through your history.

HOW TO: Have Fun With Facebook's Humorous Language Options

While you can always change your setting into more sensible alternative languages, the site offers a couple of fun linguistic Easter eggs.
You can chose to have Facebook display upside down English, or, for anyone feeling a little salty, in "pirate." Pirate essentially turns your status into your "plank," your attachments into "loot" and instead of "share" it offers the option to "blabber t' yer mates."
Sadly, anything you type in the status bar won't be upside down, or pirate-y. But with the use of some external sites you can achieve the same effect.

HOW TO: Add Symbols to Your Facebook Status

Although there are plenty of emoticons that work with Facebook Chat, typing ":)" into Facebook's status bar will not magically transform into a smiley yellow face. In fact, the only symbol you can create in a Facebook status update through the shortcut keys is a ♥, by typing "While this won't bother many Facebook users, others more used to punctuating their missives can copy and paste web-happy, universal symbols into the box, as you can see in the screengrab above.
PC users can also access some symbols by hitting "alt" + various number combinations (on a numerical keypad). So, while smileys are yet to hit Facebook statuses, you can annoy or amuse your buddies with symbols right now.

Top tips for buying stylish women's tops:-SUBMITTED BY SEASONSWAY

24 January 2013

Top tips for buying stylish women's tops-seasonsway.com

A stylish women’s top, blouse or tunic can really transform an outfit, allowing you to make a bold statement or create a subtle finishing touch, depending on your style or the occasion. women’s tops are available in a huge range of styles, from dressy and professional to effortlessly casual, so follow this simple guide to achieve the perfect look for any occasion.

For every day wear, casual women’s tops such as t-shirts and vest tops are a good choice. Brighter colours are very much on-trend for spring/summer, while in the winter months deeper and more understated colours tend to work better. A good understanding of the art of layering is a key part of creating a versatile wardrobe. When it’s particularly warm you can usually get away with wearing a thin shirt or sleeveless top on its own, but to give you some protection from the elements you can also throw a cardigan or short women’s jacket.

The trick to effective layering is to avoid clashing colours and overly bulky items. So look out for similar, but not identical, shades and keep it light. To avoid looking over-dressed, stick to a strict limit of two or three items at a time.

If you like to make a statement with your clothes, why not look for a fun graphic t-shirt? Print shirts are a great way of injecting a little bit of personality into your wardrobe, whether it’s a bold and unusual design, a witty slogan or your favourite band. Long T-shirts work particularly well with leggings or skinny jeans for a classic bohemian look.

For more formal occasions an understated look is key. Tunic and blouse-style T-shirts are very classy and office appropriate. It’s generally best to stick to lighter colours such as cream and sky blue. Complement with some equally subtle women’s trousers or a long skirt. Accessorise with some attractive jewellery to give you that little bit of extra sparkle.

When shopping for women’s tops it pays to take the time to find an outfit that looks great and that you feel comfortable in. If you find the high street too limited or intimidating, consider online catalogue shopping - a great way to find what you’re looking for at your own pace. They often stock a wider range of sizes at more competitive prices, and at this time of the year many items are on summer sale.

Seasonsway are a leading online fashion and home shopping catalogue in the India, stocking the latest fashion from around the world at great value. Seasonsway's fashion catalogue features a wide range of ladies fashion including an extensive range of women’s tops in a range of styles and sizes.

How to apply passport online!

16 January 2013

We had a passport reissue due, and we took the online route. Filling up the forms online was a breeze. So was uploading the one document that was necessary, given that the address had changed. Getting an appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra was tricky though. On several occasions, we got the message that all slots were over and we should try the following day at 6 pm. After frustrating attempts over several days, we decided to try at exactly 6 pm. It worked. If you try even 15 minutes later, you could fail.
At the Passport Kendra, people are let in only when their appointment time is due (there are about six such times during the day, and you can choose which you want when you seek the appointment). There is no mechanism outside the building to ensure people can go in a single file, so when the crowd is let in, there is a chaotic rush to the main door. But once inside, there are neat queues and a good ambience.
The Bangalore Kendras were the pilot projects, but now about 40 Kendras are live across the country. These process some 9,000 applications a day. There are also call centres to handle problems, and they take some 10,000 calls a day in 9 languages.
The passport issue duration is said to have come down dramatically. We've been told we may get it in 15 days. If that happens, it would indeed be a sea change from the past.

The direct link to apply is http://www.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink and the register and apply online!!!!!!!

Dwarka-The Legendary City of Lord Krishna

20 November 2012

The legend says Dwarka was built by Vishwakarma on the order of Lord Krishna. Land was reclaimed from the sea near the western shores of Saurashtra. A city was planned and built here. Dwarka was a planned city, on the banks of Gomati River. This city was also known as Dvaramati, Dvaravati and Kushsthali. It had six well-organized sectors, residential and commercial zones, wide roads, plazas, palaces and many public utilities. A hall called "Sudharma Sabha" was built to hold public meetings. The city also boasted having the possession of a good sea harbour. The city had 700,000 palaces made of gold, silver and other precious stones. Each one of Lord Krishna's wive had her own palace. Besides this, the city had beautiful gardens filled with flowers of all seasons and beautiful lakes.

The legendary city of Dwarka was the dwelling place of Lord Krishna. It is believed that due to damage and destruction by the sea, Dwarka has submerged six times and modern day Dwarka is the 7th such city to be built in the area. According to Hindu legend the god Krishna built a city which was ultimately destroyed by rising sea levels.

Story is as follows...

After Krishna left the earth for Vaikunta, after the Mahabharat War  and the major Yadava leaders were killed in disputes among themselves, Arjuna went to Dwarka to bring Krishna's grandsons and the Yadava wives to Hastinapur, to safety. After Arjuna left Dwarka, it was submerged into the sea. Following is the account given by Arjuna, found in the Mahabharata:
...imposed on it by nature. The sea rushed into the city. It coursed through the streets of the beautiful city. The sea covered up everything in the city. I saw the beautiful buildings becoming submerged one by one. In a matter of a few moments it was all over. The sea had now become as placid as a lake. There was no trace of the city. Dwaraka was just a name; just a memory.
The Vishnu Purana also mentions the submersion of Dwarka, stating
On the same day that Krishna departed from the earth the powerful dark-bodied Kali Age descended. The oceans rose and submerged the whole of Dwarka.

Marine Archaeological Findings

Now archaeologists and Indian Navy divers are investigating underwater ruins at Dwarka on India's western coast, said to be Krishna's city. The new efforts, it is hoped, will settle the debate currently raging over the age and authenticity of the site near the Samudranaraya temple. Divers have collected blocks and samples which will now be dated. Traditional Hindu scholars referencing ancient Hindu scriptures believe the location to be very ancient, originally built many thousands of years ago. Such notions are, of course, vehemently rejected by establishment scientists though they are willing to concede that there is evidence indicating an age of as much as 3500 years.

Of course the date when the city was destroyed would be long after the date of its inception, so a definitive maximum date has not been established. The new study is expected to resolve some of the issues. Archaeologists will now use the carbon dating technique to determine the exact age of the ruins. The earlier excavations, that first began about 40 years ago, had only revealed stones, beads, glass and terracotta pieces.

World record jump

19 October 2012

The sky proved no limit for Felix Baumgartner.

The Austrian daredevil, in fact, rose to the edge of space Sunday -- 128,100 feet, or 24 miles, above the Earth -- before plunging faster than the speed of sound.

Minutes later, he landed in southeastern New Mexico and, dropping to his knees, pumped his fists to the sky.

"He made it -- tears of joy from Mission Control," his support team said.

Dubbed "Fearless Felix," the helicopter pilot and former soldier had parachuted from such landmarks as the Petronas Towers in Malaysia and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. And he'd been preparing for his latest feat for five years -- physically, mentally and logistically.

By most accounts, all the hard work paid off. According to preliminary findings cited by Brian Utley, an official observer monitoring the mission, the 43-year-old Baumgartner flew higher than anyone ever in a helium balloon and broke the record for the highest jump.

Still, even Baumgartner seemed taken aback when Utley detailed how fast he had fallen at one point -- 833.9 mph, or Mach 1.24, smashing his goal to break the sound barrier.

"I was fighting all the way down to regain control because I wanted to break the speed of sound," said Baumgartner, who did it all with nothing but a space suit, helmet and parachute. "And then I hit it."

After a weather delay of several hours, he set off at 9:30 a.m. MT (11:30 a.m. ET) Sunday from Roswell, New Mexico, in breezy, clear conditions, strapped into a pressurized capsule that hung from a giant helium balloon. Over the next two hours, he rose high into the stratosphere.

Then he ran through a 40-step checklist, opened the hatch, disconnected from the capsule, and climbed out onto a step the size of a skateboard.

"Guardian angels will take care of you," said Mission Control just before he jumped.

"The whole world is watching now," Baumgartner responded.

After giving a salute, he jumped.

Baumgartner had trained to maximize his speed by forming a crouched "delta" position, and his team on the ground watched for any signs of potentially perilous spins or twists.

He experienced one hitch during his fall about three minutes in, reporting, "My visor is fogging up." But more problematic was when he began to veer into a "flat spin" -- which, if it continued, could send blood rushing to his head and left him out of control.

"There was a period of time where I really thought, 'I am in trouble,'" Baumgartner said, recalling how he considered pushing a button that would have released a drogue chute and ended his bid "to fly supersonic."

"But after a couple of seconds, I had that feeling I'm getting it under control. And I did," he added. "And that's why I broke the speed of sound today."

After free-falling for about four minutes and 20 seconds, he deployed a parachute for the final mile or two down to Earth.

"There's the chute," said a specialist in Mission Control, and the control room broke into applause.

As soon as Baumgartner landed, he dropped to his knees and raised his fists -- as the team at Mission Control in Roswell burst into applause.

While he and his team had prepared diligently for the jump, his survival was no guarantee.

They practiced how to avoid getting trapped in a dangerous "horizontal spin," much like the one Baumgartner feared was happening in the midst of his free-fall. His life also depended on the integrity of his pressure suit, since temperatures high up were expected to hit 70 degrees below zero Fahrenheit or lower, and the atmosphere was so thin that his blood would have vaporized if he wasn't sufficiently protected.

Testing that pressurized flight suit and helmet -- which restrict mobility and together weigh 100 pounds -- was one goal of the mission, as it could save an astronaut's life if a manned spacecraft malfunctioned. The outfit had sensors and recorders to measure everything from his speed to his heart rate.

Sunday's successful jump breaks the record set in 1960 by Col. Joe Kittinger, who fell from 102,800 feet as part of a U.S. Air Force mission. More than 50 years later, Kittinger was a consultant on Baumgartner's effort, even serving as the lone person from Mission Control talking to the Austrian throughout his attempt.

Kittinger acknowledged the ups and downs of the years-long effort Sunday. The former aviator was all smiles in lauding Baumgartner, whom he said "did perfect," and all the others involved in making the mission a success.

"It was a team effort, and Felix did a fantastic job," Kittinger said. "It was an honor for all of us to work with this brave guy."

C.I.D. set a record on 7 November 2004, when B. P. Singh entered the Limca Book of Records and Guinness Book of World Records for canning an entire episode named C.I.D. 111 in a single shot of 111 minutes without a single cut.
As of June 10, 2012, 836 episodes and 626 cases of C.I.D. have aired, not counting the special episodes. In June 2010, the frequency of the episodes went up to two episodes a week. It was increased to three episodes a week starting August 2012.

Tips for clear skin.

For Clear Skin, and a Glowing, Healthy Complexion

  1. To lighten dark spots and acne marks, dab on fresh squeezed lemon juice, or apply organic grass-fed yogurt to your entire face and neck (leave on for 10 minutes) to lighten and brighten your skin
  2. Prevent and eliminate blackheads, dry skin, and give your skin a dewy look just by drinking at least 2 liters (1/2 gallon) of filtered water per day – sounds like a lot, but it will do the trick!
  3. Speaking of water, filter your shower and sink water (my favorite is Environmental Water Systems) so you’re not dumping chlorine and chemicals on your skin and hair – you’ll end up with soft skin and healthier hair, and if you have asthma and allergies, it may help with that too
  4. Use a lotion mask nightly (or in the morning before applying makeup), for a beautifully moisturized and glowing complexion (for more info on lotion masks, I highly recommend reading The Japanese Skincare Revolution)
  5. Pimple Emergency! To heal a pimple quickly, apply 100% tea tree oil with a cotton swab directly onto the pimple every few hours, and apply vitamin E oil on the spot at night, about 1 hour before bedtime
  6. Give yourself a glow, shrink pores, give your skin an antioxidant burst, and even out skin tone with some champagne and a cotton ball
  7. Puffy face? Drink dandelion tea and try a 3-minute Tanaka face massage to get the lymph moving and eliminate puffiness
  8. Prevent pimples and keep your skin smooth with glycolic acid from a sugar scrub – mix organic cane sugar with your face or body wash in the palm of your hand, or simple scrub

  • Whiten your teeth by brushing with straight baking soda (you can add some xylitol for a better taste – it’s a sweetener derived from birch trees)
  • For a quick glow, apply a few drops of olive, coconut, or jojoba oil to the tops of your cheekbones and your browbones (where you would apply highlighter or shimmer cream)
  • Sleep on silk pillowcases to prevent hair damage/breakage and keep your skin looking youthful – I swear by silk, your hair and skin will thank you!
  • Take a quality vitamin C supplement to prevent early aging and help your body produce collagen – I love Health Force Nutritionals Truly Natural Vitamin C powder (I take 2 tsp. twice per day)
  • Keep your skin supple and smooth by supplementing with fish oil – I use Carlson Labs Cod Liver Oil (liquid) in lemon flavor
  • Eat 1 cup of leafy greens daily (preferably steamed, juiced, or blended for best digestion) to keep your complexion clear and under-eye circles at bay
  • You can use sugar externally, but avoid eating it since it can cause breakouts (not to mention headaches and mood swings) – use raw honey, stevia, or xylitol instead

    Tips for Good health.

    16 September 2012

Health – The most fundamental principle of Medicine is love
    PARACELCUS (1493-1541)
    The Great Art of Surgery
Gentlemen I urge you to engrave this on the template of your memories. There are thousands of diseases in this world but Medical Science only has empirical cure for twenty six of them.
    The rest is ….guesswork
Reproduced from the Novel Doctors by Erich Segal
Our body is constantly under attack and invasion. As we speak, as we walk down the road, as we fly airplanes, as we visit shopping malls, as we pay a visit to sick relatives and as we drink a glass of water invisible pathogens, pollutants and allergens constantly bombard the human body and try to weaken its defenses. Some we fall prey to the invasion and get compromised and a lot of times we resist the invasion
We will probably never ever exactly figure why? The best that we can do is to guess.
Medical fraternity agrees unanimously on one point that legacy statistical techniques on cure have contributed infinitely more towards overall wellbeing that the pilot scale clinical trials.
Simply put health fission is the web 2.0 of statistically proven techniques, hacks and articles on how to ward of the potential health threats
We will collate articles on various health defense mechanisms like exercise, yoga, nutritional tips, Grandmas cure and common sense techniques which will keep your immunological system on a 365/24/7 high alert. In short, Tips for Good health.
It will warm our heart valves if the readers can align a few of these to suit their constitution and living style.  Our contribution to you is an intangible health benefit to us.
Await our tweet – How most diseases revolve around the four factors?
    • Pain
    • Infection

    Health tips for Heart.

    Heart Care and Cholesterol Control
AN INDULGENT LIFESTYLE AND AN INADEQUATE DIET ARE TWO MAJOR CAUSES OF HEART DISEASE. TO STAY FIT HERE ARE A FEW MEASURES OF CARE AND CONTROL

Heart Diseases and Hypertension which lead to heart or other organ failures has been on the rise for the past 2 decades. People above the age of 40 have been suffering from such problems due to their unbalanced dietary habits. Its always advisable to control these factors if you want to reduce your risk.
    Preventing Coronary Diseases
When there are excess deposits of fat, cholesterol or other substances in the inner wall of arteries, the arteries narrow and harden into a condition known as astherosclerosis, the most common cause of heart trouble. A planned diet and regular exercise are the key to prevent atheroclerosis.
    Friendly and Unfriendly FATS
FAT should not exceed 30 per cent of your total calorie intake, which includes a maximum of 10 per cent saturated fat and 10 per cent mono-unsaturated fats. Saturated fatty acids in full-cream milk and red meat increase your cholesterol level. Use non-fat or low-fat milk and milk products instead of full-cream milk and avoid sources of saturated fatty acids like lard, butter, cream, palm oil, coconut oil, ghee and vanaspati
Mono-unsaturated fats that lower cholesterol as well as prevent formation of blood clots are present in olive, canola, peanut and mustard oils. It’s best to use these while cooking.
Omega-3, a fatty acid that prevents atherosclerosis is present in foods like herring, mackerel, salmon, tuna, soyabean, walnuts and butternuts. Take these regularly in small quantities to prevent atherosclerosis.
    Cutting Cholesterol
Dietary cholesterol should be limited to 300 mg per day. Since it largely comes from animal products, consumption of non-vegetarian foods, whole milk and milk products hould be restricted. For example, an egg has 250 gm of cholesterol and it is not advisable to take more than two to three eggs a week.
Take healthy alternatives like chicken, fish, beans, vegetable, fruits, bread, pulses, wholewheat flour, cereals, rice, millet, skimmed milk and skimmed milk products and vegetable oils like corn, sesame, soyabean, sunflower, canola, olive and mustard.
Heart disease is less frequent among those who eat high carbohydrate and fibre-rich foods. Carbohydrate and fibre-rich foods. Carbohydrates should provide at least 55 per cent of your daily calories. Foods like bread, chapattis, cereals, rice and dals provide an adequate amount of carbohydrates.

    How to control Chest Pain:
    • Boil 4-5 pods of garlic in a glass of milk and consume the garlic pods with milk daily to avoid chest pain.
    • Pound the dates with the seeds and eat them every day.
    • Increase the intake of ginger and lime in your diet.
    • Pound urad dhal to powder and eat it regularly.
    • Drink a glass of milk mixed with kadukai powder every night before going to bed.
    • Take a spoon of tulsi juice with honey in empty stomach every day.
Healthy and nutritious food is very important for maintaining a good health. Healthy food involves, regular and timely food, juices, nuts, snacks and much more. A balanced diet, good food habits are essential for a healthy life.
In the normal course of life, we forget to take necessary nutrition that is required for our body and hence we tend to get into many life style diseases. It is very essential for a person to know and understand the benefits of nature's creation like fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc.
You can find useful articles on nutrition and health benefits of various fruits and vegetables. Read on and add these to your daily life. The value of food is more when it is taken in a systematic manner and also by understanding the benefits of every bite we take.

    Seven Deadly Automotive Sins

    12 September 2012

Many lessons have been learned through the collapse of the US auto industry a couple of years back. Yet somehow, not everybody has taken them to heart. Just like European policymakers are taking their sweet time with the radical reform that’s needed, so too are automakers in the old world ignoring the lessons of GM and Chrysler.

With both Fiat and Opel in obvious trouble right now, I got the idea to fictionally (but appropriately) highlight some common mistakes that can eventually kill an automotive company altogether. And I thought the famous seven deadly sins provide the perfect parallel.
Gluttony is the desire to consume more than that which one requires. Some may get away with branching out into new segments, but not all. The word gluttony means to over-consume something and sometimes this manifests itself in automakers stuffing itself with the launch new models when the market clearly isn’t hungry for them

There are some that believe the US automakers went under because they had too many cars, most of them bad. I also believe pie charts and market surveys can’t tell you wen to diversify, but trying to build every car will always be a bad thing. Just look at Nissan Motors Europe, they are relying on just a few decent products instead of trying to make coupes, SUVs and superminis off the same production line.
But often companies squander money on costly foods for their egos, by gobbling up struggling adversaries that they can’t really digest (like the Chinese are doing right now).

Lotus’ attempt to build so many sportscars at the same time could be considered to gluttonous - like trying to swallow something bigger than you in one gulp.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, which some upmarket companies are clearly guilty off. Often, German automakers that I’d prefer not to mention get into the habit of charging €1000 ($1,300) for a bit of paint on the wheels or an armrest. The excessive pursuit of power can leave your clients bitter when they realize they’ve practically been robed. And this isn’t strictly a Ferrari or Audi thing, as full-size pickups are notorious for being cash-cows in the US.

Sloth: Ever thought the busy bees in the auto industry are always thinking up new technologies? That’s not quite true. This is probably the deadliest of all the sins when it comes to the auto industry. You’ve got some makers who just refuse to change their ways and keep the old products on the market for too long.
A friend of mine who works in internet advertising said the other day that the web will change everything. If two new cars are launched the same day, on the next everyone will know which one is better and why.

The British auto industry famously went bust when VW Golfs became faster than sportscars they made (crudely). Indifference and laziness will cripple a supply chain, kill demand and tarnish your corporate image.

Failing to offer the right car at the right time can prove fatal!
Wrath is the only sin not necessarily associated with selfishness or self-interest. This isn’t a common occurrence in the auto industry, but anger gets the best of you, you can get trapped in the pursuit of things that aren’t relevant. A corporate big wig might decide his C-segment hatch needs to have better stereos or other creature comforts, when in reality the market wants something else altogether.

Envy is a bit like greed, but it differs in one major aspect. Instead of just wanting what others already have, it means you want to also deprive him of it. Making a cheaper car, a faster car than the one your competitors make will again leave your company strapped for cash. Selling the most cars in a year can sound good, but if you’ve cut corners to get there, GM will take back its title because you’ve skimped on safety… Toyota!

Lust for carnal pleasures obviously doesn’t apply to the auto world, but the Latin “luxuria” it’s derived from can also describe restlessness and lack of control. “We should make a sexy coupe, cabrio, wagon and shooting brake out of every car” is what everybody is thinking right now, but that detracts from the simple, basic Civic, Golf and Camry that’s supposed to sell in the millions every year.

Finally, there’s pride, or the excessive belief that your iDrive, boxer engine, soft-top roof and wood-trimmed steering wheel are all better. This interferes with recognition of new technologies, like folding metal roofs, turbocharging, aluminum or carbon fiber care better. By the time you realize, you’ve already been “dammed”.

This might all have seemed a bit trivial, but Lotus had tried to build just one of those five new cars, we would already have a winner by now. Less is more these days - and if you can make two into one, one many into one MQB platform like VW is doing, you’ll also be down in costs an up in demand.

How to be champion in swimming.

    11 September 2012

"Take your marks." The swimmers bend down on their blocks, ready. The buzzer sounds. Eight of the best male freestyle swimmers in the United States dive into the pool. In a little under 2 minutes the200-meter Olympic swimming trial semifinal is over, and two swimmers are headed to the 2012 London Olympics.

Those swimmers are Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, two men with arguably the best freestyle form in the world. But why did Lochte beat out Phelps in this particular heat? New research being published in the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering may not answer that question, but it does lend a bit of scientific credence to their strokes. The short version: It's all in the arms.

Rajat Mittal is a mechanical engineer at Johns Hopkins University and lead researcher on a project to study the fastest swimming technique. Mittal says swimmers used two different kinds of arm strokes when training for and competing in freestyle events.

One, deep catch, is about as simple as swimming gets. When your arm enters the water, you try to pull it straight back exerting as much force as possible. It's a difficult stroke to master. Even the highest-level athletes need to change up their strokes on long-distance swims because of the sheer strength it takes to propel through the water with a straight arm.

The other stroke, sculling, became popular in the 1960s when a prominent coach encouraged his athletes to move their arms like propellers underwater. Instead of trying to move yourself through the water using only your shoulders, the sculling stroke allows a swimmer's elbows to jut out slightly, making it easier for the hands to wave through the water like a propeller creating less resistance.

Mittal's research focused on one seemingly simple question: Scientifically, which stroke should propel swimmers the fastest? The team started with video; USA Swimming provided Mittal and his team with underwater tapes of world-class swimmers using both the deep catch and sculling strokes while swimming laps. Mittal also modeled the arms of a few swimmers to use in computer animations of the strokes, a time-consuming process.

    20 things about spiders.

    18 August 2012

1  The venom of the Australian funnel-web spider can kill a person in less than an hour, and its fangs can bite right through a shoe.

2  But for most people, fear of spiders is a far greater problem than the spiders themselves. Researchers at the University of São Paulo have developed an improbable way to undo arachnophobia by having patients stare at pictures of “spiderlike” objects—a tripod, a carousel, a person with dreadlocks.
3  Quackery? Apparently not. In a 2007 study, the scientists reported a 92 percent success rate.
And there is an upside to spider bites. Take the Brazilian wandering spider, Phoneutria nigriventer, whose venom causes painful penile erections that last for many hours (that’s the bad news).
5  The good news: The responsible toxin could yield new treatments for erectile dysfunction
    .
6  The venom of the South American tarantula Grammostola spatulata might be used to treat atrial fibrillation. It contains a peptide that can calm an irregular heartbeat brought on by stress.
7  Back in Australia, Glenn King at the University of Queensland is studying the Blue Mountains funnel-web spider (Hadronyche versuta) with an eye toward developing eco-friendly pesticides. Proteins in this spider’s venom target the nervous system of insects but leave humans unharmed.
8  First, though, there’s the unpleasant matter of getting the venom. Workers at the Spider Pharm in Yarnell, Arizona, “milk” up to 1,000 spiders a day.
9  The bugs are anesthetized with carbon dioxide, then zapped with electricity, which makes them release venom into minuscule glass capillaries connected to their fangs.
    10  Web master: Todd Blackledge
at the University of Akron finds that spider silk could be used as synthetic muscle. Adjusting humidity up and down causes the silk to expand and contract with 50 times the punch of the equivalent mass of human muscle.
11  Blackledge envisions spider silk someday being used to operate miniature robotic devices and drug delivery systems.
12  Unlike many sticky things, the glue of orbed web spiders gets stronger in the presence of water, polymer scientists working with Blackledge have discovered, suggesting that it might prove a useful adhesive for surgery or for underwater engineering.
13  Spider-goat, Spider-goat, does whatever a spider can: By manipulating genes, molecular biologists at the University of Wyoming have gotten goats to produce milk containing the protein that makes up spider silk
    (video).
14  Next, scientists aim to introduce the silk gene into alfalfa, which is far more efficient to mass produce and, frankly, less creepy.
15  Safe sex: The male nursery web spider (Pisaura mirabilis) will bring a silk-wrapped insect to a female prior to mating so she will eat the gift—instead of him.
16  Safer sex: The funnel-web spider Agelenopsis aperta has a different approach, putting the female into a cataleptic state before mating so she won’t cannibalize him.
17  Scientists at Radford University in Virginia say the A. aperta male can disable the female from 4.5 centimeters (about 2 inches), suggesting he maybe deploying a gas to knock out the femme fatale. 18  Cheap date: Certain cobweb spiders dine on
bugs poached from others’ webs.
19  Others dispense with the killing entirely. The jumping spider Bagheera kiplingi—named in the 1800s after the panther in Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book—is mostly a vegetarian.
20  Don’t want one of these things jumping in your salad? Steven Kutcher, spider wrangler on the film Arachnophobia, says a dusting of talcum powder or a spritz of Lemon Pledge makes a tabletop or other flat surface too slippery for the critters to get any traction.

    New Maya Temple Found

    12 August 2012

New Maya Temple Found, Covered With Giant Faces..
Some 1,600 years ago, the Temple of the Night Sun was a blood-red beacon visible for miles and adorned with giant masks of the Maya sun god as a shark, blood drinker, and jaguar.
Long since lost to the Guatemalan jungle, the temple is finally showing its faces to archaeologists, and revealing new clues about the rivalrous kingdoms of the Maya.

The sides of the temple are decorated with 5-foot-tall (1.5-meter-tall) stucco masks showing the face of the sun god changing as he traverses the sky over the course of a day.

One mask is sharklike, likely a reference to the sun rising from the Caribbean in the east, Houston said.

The noonday sun is depicted as an ancient being with crossed eyes who drank blood, and a final series of masks resemble the local jaguars, which awake from their jungle slumbers at dusk.

In Maya culture the sun is closely associated with new beginnings and the sun god with kingship, Houston explained. So the presence of solar visages on a temple next to a royal tomb may signify that the person buried inside was the founder of a dynasty—El Zotz's first king.

It's an example of "how the sun itself would have been grafted onto the identity of kings and the dynasties that would follow them," he said in a press statement.

Maya archaeologist David Freidel added, "Houston's hypothesis is likely correct that the building was dedicated to the sun as a deity closely linked to rulership. The Diablo Pyramid will certainly advance our knowledge of Early Classic Maya religion and ritual practice."

Houston's team also found hints that the Maya, who added new layers to the temple over generations, regarded the building as a living being. For example, the noses and mouths of the masks in older, deeper layers of the temple were systematically disfigured.

"This is actually quite common in Maya culture," Houston told National Geographic News. "It's very hard to find any Mayan depiction of the king that doesn't have its eyes mutilated or its nose hacked ... but 'mutilation' is not the appropriate term to describe it. I see it as more of a deactivation.

"It's as if they're turning the masks off in preparation for replicating them in subsequent layers ... It's not an act of disrespect. It's quite the opposite."
