Mobile traffic in India increases by 54% between December and June: Nokia Siemens

Data from Nokia Siemens Networks collected in its mBit index suggests that the mobile data traffic in India has increased by 54 percent between December 2011 and June 2012. The mBit index aggregates data from 2G and 3G networks and accounts for 30 percent of the total mobile traffic in the country.
The report reveals that data usage has increased by 70 percent on 3G networks and 2G networks have seen a 47 percent increase. 2G customers account for three quarters of the total traffic however 3G consumers consume four times the data than their 2G brethren. The report reveals that at this pace the traffic should double by June 2013.
The report notes that in spite of the low 3G penetration, 3G data growth has outpaced the 2G data growth. That said because 2G networks contribute to 75 percent of the total data generated, 2G is likely to continue to play a pivotal role in bringing the internet to the masses.
People on 2G networks normally use 81 percent of their data on web browsing, and 17 percent for video downloads.
